The title of this post says it all! There's joy to be had in writing a series. It's more of an internal push that I have little control over, which begins when I type The End on a story. Something in my psyche needles me into exploring and eventually penning a second book, then a third and fourth, and in one case, a fifth. Kudos to the authors who keep going even after the fifth. (i.e. Janet Evanovich with her Stephanie Plum series and J. D. Robb with her In Death/Eve Dallas series)
My first adventure into an ongoing saga started with Married to Maggie. Halfway through Tysen and Maggie's story, the supporting characters came alive as much as Ty and Maggie did. I knew from that point on, it would become a series. It was a fun, yet brain-cramping challenge. The biggest thing I had to conquer in this joyful chaos, was while in the middle of writing book one I had to come up with the storylines for the next books in the series. And I had to get to know those secondary characters on deeper level in order to go forward.
From a kernel of an idea for Married to Maggie, I went on to write Keeping Kylee, then Taming Tori, and Not Without Nancy -- appropriately titled Texas Boys Falling Fast Series.
I'm glad the madness of writing a series hung onto me, as I now have my Wine and Sweat Pants Series (5 books) and Coffee and Dessert in Key West Series (4 books). I also tiptoed into short nonfiction with a 4-book writing resource series called Creatively Done.
If you're interested in writing a series, don't let the keeping-track-of-details process hold you back. Organize them. Maybe even create a storyboard for them. The more you pay attention to those secondary/supporting characters in book one, the easier it will be to write the subsequent books.
Here's a peek at my other series:
